Shelter: a Squatumentary
(2008), 45 min.

With universally skyrocketing property values, rent and home-ownership have become unaffordable at best and impossible at worst. Thus, people all over the world continue a long tradition of circumventing the expensive price tag and reclaiming this basic human right by squatting. Shelter: a Squatumentary is a documentary film that explores the squatting movement in the East Bay from 2004 to 2007. We follow three examples of the struggle for housing in an unaffordable marketplace such as the San Francisco Bay Area. Hellarity House, Banana House, and Power Machine are stories of squatters who have found one tentative solution to the ongoing housing crisis.

The screening will be followed by a discussion on squatting as a tactic and how to use it not for lifestylist dropout culture but instead for actual community building. Squatting—a historically clandestine move—needs to come out of hiding and build a real community around its claim to free housing for all. Otherwise, this age-old tactic will continue to serve temporary ends; squatters will continue to be evicted and crack new squats in secret; they will continue to alienate each other along with the mainstream—all the while, still under the thumb of the housing market and its landlords.

Upstate NY-wide Unconventional Action meeting in Syracuse, NY
Sunday, April 13th
3pm-6pm
Womens Info Center, 601 Allen St, Syracuse NY, 13210

We saw just a sliver of the pent-up rage only barely hidden across Upstate NY against the war, against our rulers and their brutal economy, on the fifth anniversary of the Iraq war. Anarchists and anti-authoritarians joined disruptive demonstrations in Binghamton, Rochester, and Syracuse – blocking roads, pounding drums, making the connections between war and everyday oppression on these stolen lands. Many protests felt a new sense of urgency and determination filling the streets, having popular support despite facing police surveillance, harassment and sometimes arrests. In Binghamton, NY, many students were attacked, pepper-sprayed and arrested by cops. This summer we will confront the war-makers and their blood-drenched system in its totality with creative actions at the Democratic and Republican National conventions based on the strategies outlined by the Unconventional Action network.

Join us in Syracuse, NY for an Upstate New York-wide Unconventional Action meeting hosted by the Syracuse Solidarity Network, an affiliate of the North East Anarchist Network. Following meetings in Binghamton and Rochester, we’ll continue to network and link up our struggles across the region and mobilize for the DNC/RNC. We will hear updates from the Bash Back! Trans/Queer anti-RNC convergence in Chicago, April 5-6th, and prepare messages of solidarity and input for the pReNC in the Twin Cities, May 5th. Please bring information about movements in your area to share.

While we prepare to bring the fight to the spectacle of the conventions, we are also using this opportunity to network and mobilize Upstate New York for the emergency demonstration in Philadelphia April 19th to free Mumia Abu-Jamal. From the prison-dotted landscape of Upstate, we stand firmly in solidarity with all those across the world committed to free Mumia, free all political prisoners & prisoners of war, and abolish this racist, capitalist system destroying life & planet once and for all.

(The date for this event is being pushed back in solidarity with and out of respect for Mumia Abu Jamals denial of a retrial-the major protest in Philadelphia is occurring on April 26th and we urge anyone that can make it to attend!)

http://www.myspace.com/firearmskillshare

In early May of 2008 Syracuse will be host to a firearms skillshare. The purpose of this training is to demystify guns and impart knowledge for the skills involved in handling a firearm. We will teach in the spirit of DIY (Do It Yourself) and empower others to learn a skill that can indeed be valuable. The atmosphere will be open and welcoming with no tolerance for racist, sexist or homophobic comments or actions of any kind. We feel this knowledge will be especially useful for those who are wholly unfamiliar or uncomfortable with firearms thanks to many (often true) stereotypes associated with them. Please join us and feel free to ask any questions that may come to mind!

“Building a Culture of Resistance in Syracuse”
Syracuse Solidarity Network discussion/meeting
Monday, April 14
5pm, Women’s Info Center
601 Allen St, Syracuse, NY 13210

Join the Syracuse Solidarity Network (SSN) for a conversation on building a culture of resistance in Syracuse. Following the militant demonstrations against the fifth anniversary of the war in Syracuse and across Upstate NY, how can we move towards more popular and effective movements for radical change?

Cultures of resistance support and take part in movements through ideas, art music, community and action. They are the grass roots from which opposition to the system grows. Let’s discuss how we can build supportive, creative alternatives together and make the revolutionary movements Syracuse deserves!

We would especially like to invite:
- radical activists/organizers who can tell us what’s going on in their groups
- musicians, artists, zine writers, concert organizers, poets who are interested in joining a loose working group to put on creative radical art, music and cultural events
- and people with shirt, button, or craft skills who want to put a radical message out.

We will also hear updates from local Syracuse groups & how to plug in ;reports back from the International Declaration in Defense of El Barrio, April 6th on NYC City Hall Steps, for info see http://zapagringo.blogspot.com/2008/03/join-international-campaign.html ;updates on the Firearms Skillshare, for info see http://www.myspace.com/firearmskillshare ;and updates/plans for the Solidarity Without Borders campaign, for info see http://neanarchist.net/?q=sinfronteras/about

The political prison/prisoner support project of SSN be making plans to mobilize people from Syracuse for the mass demonstration in support of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal in protest of the recent court decision to deny him a new trial and re-sentence him to either death or life in prison, the demo will be in Philadelphia April 26th, for more info see http://FreeMumia.com
